Here are a couple – kill and rob 1 merchant, then select Leave from the
menu and you can exit before discovered and build up a bankroll. Keep
putting money in the bank and then walk back and forth to adjacent towns
and back. You gain interest.
Moving up levels:

Moving up levels is connected to the museum exhibits you’ve viewed. (This
is certainly a change from other RPG’s, where it’s based on experience
points, which are usually gained by killing monsters.) Once you’ve viewed
all of the exhibits of a certain coin type and leave the museum, you will
get a message on your return that the Caretaker wants to see you, and he’ll
move you up a level.
